Our achievements

Agriculture plays a major role in the development of livestock, rural economy and livestock farms in Bangladesh. Livestock is an essential sector in food security, ensuring balanced food, self-employment, earning foreign exchange, fertility of agricultural land and development of memory and formation of talented nation in this populous country. The role of cattle in the agricultural economy of the country is about 3.10% and about 70% of the people are directly or indirectly dependent on cattle (Source: Livestock Economics Branch). Of these, 20 per cent are directly and 50 per cent are indirectly dependent on cattle, indicating the important contribution of cattle in poverty alleviation.

The density of cattle per square kilometer in Bangladesh is higher than that of any of its neighboring countries and this number of cattle has increased from 2005-2006 to 2014-2015. At present, there are 2 crore 36 lakh cows, 14 lakh 61 thousand buffaloes, 2 crore 58 lakh goats and 33 lakh 35 thousand sheep in the country (Source: Livestock Economics Branch). According to the Department of Livestock Services, the current production of milk, meat and eggs is 43% (72.75 lakh metric tons), 8% (81.52 lakh metric tons) and 74% (1191.24 crore) of the demand respectively. According to the vision 2021 of the present government, in the light of the demand of this growing population of the country, the production of animal meat should be doubled.
